Odate bent wappa is made of Akita cedar, one of the most famous woods in Japan, and painstakingly crafted by skilled artisans. It is a craft of Odate City, Akita Prefecture, and is designated as a traditional handicraft of Japan.
Bent wappa is made from the quarter-sawn part of the annual ring, which has the most beautiful grain. The quarter-sawn part is then thinly stripped and soaked in boiling water to soften it, which is quickly bent to fit the mold and dried before the next process.
The dried pieces are then sewn one by one with cherry bark. The bottom is fitted so that there are no gaps, and then filed to complete the process.
Bento boxes are an item that can be said to be the roots of Odate bent-wood.
Since they are handmade using natural materials, solid differences may occur. The color and texture may appear different between the photograph and the actual product.
