Description
・Edo glass" refers to glass made by hand by craftsmen, a traditional technique that has continued since the Edo period (1603-1868). The glass industry in Tokyo-Edo is said to have begun in the early 18th century with the production of mirrors, glasses, wind chimes, and other items. In the Meiji era (1868-1912), the industry developed into a regional industry in the Taisho and Showa eras, inheriting Edo period techniques and introducing new knowledge and technology from Europe and the United States. In 2002, it was designated as a traditional craft by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, and in 2014, it was designated as a traditional national craft by the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry. The main motifs of the Taburo Kobo's Edo glass series are based on the common patterns and ukiyo-e prints that have been popular since the Edo period.
