Natural Akita cedar
Urethane paint
The art of bending wood has been handed down for generations in the snow-covered mountain villages of Michinoku.
Today, this traditional technique continues to be preserved in the making of magewappa (bentwood lunch boxes). Made by shaving straight-grained Akita cedar into thin sheets, the wood is boiled to soften, bent into rings, and fastened with cherry bark. This process embodies the distinctive craftsmanship of magewappa.
The natural warmth and elegant appearance of the cedar give magewappa a unique charm that continues to attract devoted fans.
Akita cedar, grown in its natural environment, is known for its slow yet consistent growth, even in old age. It features narrow growth rings, a beautiful luster, uniform grain, exceptional strength, and minimal warping—making it an ideal material for fine craftsmanship.
Please note: Odate Magewappa is a high-demand item with limited availability. If it is out of stock, restocking may take approximately 2 to 3 months.
