Nagashi Somen is one of Japan's most exciting summer events wherein people pick noodles with chopsticks that are flowing down in cold water through a bamboo slide. Noodles are extra thin and they are usually eaten dipped in tsuketsuyu (a soy sauce-based broth) with some flecks of chopped green onions and grated Japanese wasabi in it. Diners use chopsticks to catch the slippery noodles as they float. This is where your chopstick skills are definitely tested!

It's really easy to do this at home!

Simply install a long sloping slide of bamboo in the garden or in the street. Fix a jet of cold water at the top to flow down the improvised water slide. Diners sit on either side of the bamboo slide, equipped with a bowl of dipping broth and a pair of chopsticks. Choose someone to sit by the water jet and release handfuls of pre-cooked noodles down the slide. Oh yes, make sure to place a basket or a bowl at the end of the pipe to collect the noodles that are missed. That way you don't waste any food!
