Shichi-Go-San (seven-five-three) is a traditional Japanese celebration for the healthy growth of young children of 3 and 7-year-old girls and 5-year-old boys (though in some families 3-year-old boys also) held annually on November 15th. On this day, children make their debut at the local shrine wearing traditional Japanese clothes (Hakama and Kimono) and participate in a Shinto purification ceremony to pray for long and happy life, marking their passage into middle childhood. This year, we celebrated our 5-year-old son's Shichi-Go-San. It was a bit early but we wanted to avoid the crowd and take our family photos at the beach...

A fun seasonal way to enjoy cold somen noodles flown down tubes of bamboo from one end to the other! This year we've go to make our own slide by cutting off a bamboo pole in half and removing the knots. When it's all set, it's time to enjoy the cold food! Nagashi Somen is one of Japan's most exciting summer events wherein people pick noodles with chopsticks that are flowing down in cold water through a bamboo slide. Noodles are extra thin and they are usually eaten dipped in tsuketsuyu (a soy sauce-based broth) with some flecks of chopped green onions and grated Japanese wasabi in it. Diners use chopsticks to catch the slippery noodles as they float. This is where your chopstick skills are definitely tested! It's really easy to do this at home! Simply install a long sloping slide of bamboo in the garden or in the street....
